Year Over Year Poker Network Traffic Numbers
growth of online poker - computer mouse - arrow going up - word poker in 3d Pokerscout (link below) recently released their Weekly Online Poker Traffic Update. In their report, Pokerscout included data of the Year over Year change in traffic for the major poker networks.
First off, according to their report, the worldwide online poker market has grown 25% in the past year. Rooms such as Pokerstars have been placing a clear emphasis on growing their international customer base, and it definitely seems to be paying off. Players from 118 different countries and territories participated in the World Series of Poker this year, a clear testament to the fact that poker is becoming a global phenomenon.
Over the past year, the 800 pound gorilla of the industry, Pokerstars, has only grown larger. According to Pokerscout, Pokerstars has grown 72% from this time last year. They are investing heavily in expanding their global reach, but they are also still benefiting from remaining in the United States post-UIGEA. Much of their competition (namely, Party Poker) decided to pull out of the US, leaving Pokerstars to swell in size. People play where the action is, and Pokerstars has more action than any other site in the industry.
Second on the list - Full Tilt Poker. According to Pokerscout, they have grown 54% over the past year. The reasons are the same - poker is growing internationally, and US-based players are flocking to Pokerstars and Full Tilt Poker. Full Tilt is especially aggressive when it comes to marketing to American players, and this has definitely paid off for them in the months following the passage of the UIGEA. Pokerstars and Full Tilt Poker are the two leaders in the industry right now, followed by the iPoker Network.
The iPoker Network has had a great year as well. They are currently the third largest poker network in the world (ahead of Party Poker), having grown an additional 53% from this time last year. There are a number of well-known skins on the iPoker Network, and I would imagine that they will continue their rapid growth.
The Cakepoker Network has grown 89% in size over the past year. They are currently the tenth largest network in the world, just behind Ultimatebet.
The biggest two losers, according to Pokerscout, are Party Poker and Absolute Poker. Party Poker has been stumbling ever since they decided to withdraw from the United States. Many non-US players decided to leave the site in favor of Pokerstars and Full Tilt Poker. Party Poker used to be by far the largest poker room in the industry (pre-UIGEA), and now they are the fourth largest. Sure, they lost a big chunk of their user base after closing the accounts of their American customers, but they have still seen other non-US networks post large gains in customers over the past year or two. Party Poker will apparently be releasing a major revamp of their software over the coming months - it will be interesting to see whether or not this reverses the tide. They have dropped 29% in the past year.
Absolute Poker has also dropped 29% in the past year. Much of their drop can likely be attributed to the "superuser" scandal that took place last year. Many players abandoned the site after that transpired, and haven't come back.
Bodog is also included on the list, having dropped a total of 28% in the past year. They have been battling severe payout issues for a while now, and this has certainly helped to whittle down their poker client base. Full Tilt and Pokerstars have also had payout issues, but Bodog's have seemed to be particularly bad.
Bodog accepts US players, but they are running into the same problem that other rooms are facing - people want to play on the sites that have the highest number of active players, and those are Pokerstars and Full Tilt Poker.
Overall, the online poker industry seems to be healthy and poised for more growth. Pokerstars continues to put distance between itself and the rest of the competition, at the expense of Party Poker, Bodog and others.

Weekly Online Poker Traffic Update 31.08.2009
Online poker traffic climbed more than 2% this week, led by a 3% gain at PokerStars as it gears up for the eighth annual World Championship of Online Poker set to begin Thursday. Nine of the top 10 sites and networks saw an increase in traffic.
The surge seemed to be spearheaded by European players this week with iPoker, Everest, Microgaming, IPN, Svenska Spel, Entraction, Pacific and Betfair all up more than 3%, while Full Tilt broke even and Cereus eased back 3% after recent gains. PokerStars issued a press release this week stating that US customers make up less than half of their player base, which may explain why Stars was able to participate in this week's upswing.

Weekly Online Poker Traffic Update
11/1/2009
Online poker traffic fell nearly 1% again this week, led by declines at Full Tilt Poker and Cereus Network. Seven of the top 10 sites and networks showed a loss for the week.
The lackluster week brought winning streaks to an end for some of the major operators. CakePoker Network had posted five straight weeks of gains and last week was threatening to take over ninth place from IPN. This week Cake fell 3% and now has more ground to make up as IPN rose fractionally.
Ongame Network, which had just recently crossed over into positive annual growth, dropped more than 5% this week and is back in the red. Cereus Network also fell into negative territory with an 8% decline.
Full Tilt Poker's 2% slide comes amid reports that instant e-checks are no longer working at the site. Combined with recent incidents of paper checks bouncing or being re-issued, the news suggests the possibility that the US Attorney's Office in New York is still working behind the scenes to shut down payment processors affiliated with US-friendly poker sites.
On the bright side, industry leader PokerStars does not seem to have been affected by payment processor difficulties. The site continues to gain players and now stands at an all-time high, excluding the frenzied week of the 25 billionth hand promotion in February. PokerStars and Full Tilt Poker both continue to maintain annual growth rates in excess of 50%

Re: Traffic Rangliste der Pokerrooms by Pokerscout
Weekly Online Poker Traffic Update vom 24.01.2010
Online poker traffic dropped another 1% this week, down for the second straight week after strong post-holiday gains. Eight of the top 10 sites and networks showed a loss for the week.
The big news of the week was Full Tilt Poker's introduction of Rush Poker. The game speeds up action by constantly shifting players to new tables. Immediately after folding a hand, the player is taken to a newly created table with a random collection of opponents, where a new hand is dealt. The game speeds up action considerably, featuring an average number of hands per hour that is 2.5 to 4 times as high as normal tables.
The game has proved wildly popular by any measure of success. Nearly 30% of the site's cash game players are now playing Rush Poker. The frenzy is drawing players away from every other game variant on the site.
As a result, the site-wide average number of cash game hands dealt per hour is up a whopping 60% from last week. Since cash games account for more than two-thirds of a poker site's revenue, this would seem to be a phenomenal boost to the bottom line.
A look at the player distribution, however, reveals that players are moving down in stakes to play Rush Poker. The most popular Rush limit is $0.05/$0.10 no limit hold'em, the lowest stakes offered. In fact, close to 30% of all cash game hands dealt on Full Tilt are now $0.05/$0.10 no limit hold'em, up from 13% last week. Meanwhile, player counts at the non-Rush limits of $2/$4 - $5/$10 are down 45%-50%. From a profit perspective, the downshift in stakes must at least partially offset the increase in hands per hour.
Still, the game launch has been a major success for Full Tilt Poker in a highly competitive market. The rollout seems to have taken the industry by surprise, and there are indications that Full Tilt intends to keep its edge by all possible means. According to the Rush Poker web site, a patent application has been filed to keep others from copying the game format. Even if a patent is issued, however, it is an open question whether the possibility of legal action would be enough to stop archrival PokerStars from developing its own version of the game.
As with any new game variant, the wild popularity of Rush Poker can be expected to recede to a plateau level in the weeks ahead.
Everleaf Gaming merged its two networks this week to create a larger player pool. The new network, operating as Everleaf Gaming Network for the time being, combines the former Everleaf Gaming Network and Universal Poker Network. The final name of the combined network has not yet been announced.
Top Of The Charts
PartyPoker held onto third place for a third week as its Cash Machine promotion continued. PartyPoker now holds a nearly 5% edge on iPoker. Whether that lead can be maintained when the promotion ends remains to be seen.
Movers
Everleaf Gaming Network moved ahead of Action Poker Network to take 19th place among actively tracked sites.

The worldwide online poker market continues to grow at a healthy pace. According to PokerScout's ACES indicator, online poker traffic is rising at an annual rate of 30%.

Weekly Online Poker Traffic Update 14.02.2010
Online poker traffic rose 2% this week, led by significant gains at PokerStars and IPN while many other sites lost traffic. Six of the top 10 sites and networks finished the week in the red.
PokerStars gained 4% as its 40 billionth hand promotion got underway. The structure of the promotion was changed this time so that players in the milestone hands receive a reward based on the number of frequent player points accumulated in the previous 40 hands. This reduces the incentive for players to play multiple micro-stakes tables and fold every hand while waiting for the milestone.
As a result, the cash game player numbers have not been spiking around the milestone hands as they have on previous occasions. However, the promotion has boosted player counts to new highs. PokerStars has now seen three consecutive daily peaks of 50,000 or higher, the first time that has happened in online poker history.
Interestingly, the 40 billionth hand celebration comes almost exactly one year after the 25 billionth hand was dealt on February 16, 2009. Fifteen billion hands dealt in one year equates to a truly impressive 475 hands dealt per second around the clock.
Top Of The Charts
The top four ranked sites kept their positions this week. This makes six consecutive weeks without a change in the top four spots.
Movers
IPN (aka International, aka Boss Media) shot up 29%, leapfrogging four other sites to land in sixth place. Everest Poker and Cereus Network slid down one spot as a result of the IPN move, while Cake Poker Network fell two places to 10th.
Year Over Year
The pace of online poker growth has slackened recently as tough comparables from 2009 come into play. According to PokerScout's ACES indicator, online poker traffic is rising at an annual rate of 22%.
Notable gainers:
Full Tilt Poker 64%
PokerStars 35%
IPN 35%
Notable losers:

PokerStars has now seen three consecutive daily peaks of 50,000 or higher, the first time that has happened in online poker history.
Interestingly, the 40 billionth hand celebration comes almost exactly one year after the 25 billionth hand was dealt on February 16, 2009. Fifteen billion hands dealt in one year equates to a truly impressive 475 hands dealt per second around the clock.

Weekly Online Poker Traffic Update vom 21.03.2010
Weekly Online Poker Traffic Update vom 21.03.2010
Online poker traffic fell 4.1% this week. The decline was surprisingly deep and broad, with all 10 of the top 10 sites and networks showing a loss of at least 3% for the week.
March Madness (the NCAA men's basketball tournament) in the US could partly explain the drop in traffic at PokerStars and Full Tilt Poker, but it would not account for the decline among Euro-focused sites. A more likely explanation for the fall in traffic is the beginning of spring break season. The seasonal dip appears to be a little larger than in recent years, perhaps indicating that players are traveling more as optimism grows about the state of the economy. An increase in travel would be a positive sign for attendance at the World Series of Poker in two months.
PokerStars and Full Tilt Poker continue to dominate the online poker industry, with a combined market share of just over 60%. All of the other sites and networks combined have barely as many players as PokerStars alone.

Re: Traffic Rangliste der Pokerrooms by Pokerscout
Weekly Online Poker Traffic Update vom 28.03.2010
Online poker traffic fell again this week as spring break season continued to take its toll. Player counts dropped by 1.1%, with eight of the top 10 sites and networks showing a loss.
Compared to the same week last year, online poker traffic was up 12% this week. While still positive, this is the slowest annual growth in recent years and may be the lowest in the history of online poker. A record seven of the top 15 sites and networks have shrunk 10% or more in the past year.
The poor annual performance may be due in part to a slightly delayed spring break season this year. If that is the case, a recovery in the next week or two may push the growth rate back above 15%.
On the bright side, regulated, country-specific online gambling continues to gather momentum. Swedish monopoly Svenska Spel maintains a ranking of 12th in the world. Italy's regulated online poker tournament market is flourishing, with cash games due to come online in the near future. The launch of regulated online poker in France is also in the cards. Meanwhile, the powerful land-based casino lobbying group AGA this week seemed to shift its stance in favor of regulated online gambling in the US, lending further credence to the notion that a reversal in US policy could happen in the near future.
