On one of the breaks, I went up to Stuey and congratulated him on how well he was playing. I then said to him, “I can’t believe those guys allow you to pick up pot after pot. I’m surprised that they call your raises and try to play with you. Why don’t they just come over the top and move all in on you?” He looked me right in the eye and said, “Sexton, if you ever tell anyone that, I’ll kill you.”

It's hard work. Gambling. Playing poker. Don't let anyone tell you different. Think about what it's like sitting at a poker table with people whose only goal is to cut your throat, take your money, and leave you out back talking to yourself about what went wrong inside. That probably sounds harsh. But that's the way it is at the poker table. If you don't believe me, then you're the lamb that's going off to the slaughter."

Stu Unger, three-time WSOP Champion

bandit

See, in my world - the world of high-stakes gin and poker - we play for cold, hard cash. It's all business, pure and simple. Anyone who thinks cardplaying is a 'game' - I'll show you a loser. Money... M-O-N-E-Y. That's how you measure success. One dollar at a time. One chip at a time. That's how you keep score."

Anyhow: sehenswert !

Stu Ungar never took care about money: he was a born gambler. And only one thing he needed money for was gambling, which included gin, golf, sports, horses and poker, of course...

And when he had won at the WSOP in 1981 he was asked: "What will you do with all the money for first prize?"... He giggled and said: "Lose it!"

******************************************************************************************************************************

Stu Ungar looked very young. Once he and his friends went to Palm Springs to play golf. They decided to eat at the place that was considered to be the best one. They wanted a table for four, but as they didn't have reservation they couldn't get it. Then Stu gave maitre D $100 and said that he will be at the bar...

And with these words he went to the bar and ordered a Rum and coke. I mean - he tried to order, because the bartender asked him to show his I.D. Stu tried to insist that he was 35 years old, but in vain. Without any hesitation Stu pulled out two rolls of cash (approximately $20,000) and showed them to the bartender: "There. There is my I.D. Do you think any teenager would be carrying around that kind of money?" After that the bartender was ready to serve him. And at that moment there also came maitre D: he had found a table for four.

Diese Szene kommt im Film auch vor, Stu sitzt mit am Tisch:

Story about Jack Straus

Jack Straus, the WSOP 1982 winner, was not a boring opponent at all. He was always creative and sometimes absolutely unpredictable at a poker table. Once, in a no-limit Hold'em game, he was dealt a seven and a deuce of different suits, the most ugly starting hand you can ever imagine.

Even a maniac would hesitate whether to play it or not. But Straus didn’t hesitate. He raised. One player called. The flop was 7-3-3. So now Straus had two small pairs with the worst possible kicker. “What will my opponent do now?” he wandered. The opponent raised him $5,000 immediately. Oh well, the guy had a big pocket pair for sure.

So Jack… called! The turn was a deuce, which gave him the absolutely useless pair. It was lesser than the one on the board. But Straus made a bet: $18,000. That was a suicide, you’ll probably say. His opponent was at a loss. He had a good hand and tried to find out whether Straus was bluffing or had the nuts. He looked at him with doubt. "I'll tell you what,” began Jack breaking the silence, - “just gimme one of those $25 chips of yours and you can see either one of my cards - whichever one you choose." The opponent was completely astonished by this offer. Several seconds later he tossed over a single green chip and pointed at one of Jack’s holecards. Jack turned it face up. It was a deuce.

His opponent thought that the other card was a deuce either and Jack had made a full house (and what else could think? That a guy raised with absolutely nothing? He probably was a good player, but not as good as Straus to even think of such a brave playing style). He folded and Straus stole the pot.

"It was just a matter of psychology," Jack Strauss explained modestly.

Ungar's play was as hot as the gallery

...
There, the players constantly jockeyed for chip position, hoping to cut into eventual winner Stu Ungar's huge lead, which grew as he constantly made large raises on small pots that the others could not call with marginal hands.

Ungar, legs pumping nervously beneath his chair and constantly rifling chips, was relentless even when losing hands.

When he sustained a $100,000-plus loss in a big pot, he silently mouthed obscenities, then looked up through his deep blue granny glasses into the stands and shrugged at friend and fellow gambler Billy Baxter.

Many assumed, though no one could actually prove that it was Baxter who helped Ungar put up the large buy-in fee on Monday. It is no secret in the poker world that Ungar had been in a tight financial situation as of late.

A SUN reporter recalls that about two months ago, he was sitting across from Ungar as they played in the Monday night $20 buy-in no-limit Texas hold 'em tourney at the Orleans casino. The first-place purse that night was about one percent of the cool million Ungar won Thursday.

Another time during Thursday's finale to the $10,000 buy-in no-limit Texas hold 'em event, Ungar made a large bet on a 9-8 offsuit -- a marginal hand.

After losing the pot, he turned to ESPN television announcer and fellow gambler Gabe Kaplan and grinned sheepishly, saying, "I'm gonna look bad (on TV) playing hands like that."

But aggressive play has always been Ungar's trademark. His slight stature belies an extraordinary competitiveness, determination and willingness to flat out gamble that propelled him to two earlier World Series championships and a host of other victories.

Casino executive John Strzemp, seemingly out of his league against the professional gamblers, won some incredible hands while he unmercifully chain-smoked in a manner that would have made the Marlboro Man envious.

Gambler Ron Stanley was the table's fashion plate in a tuxedo, accessorized with a white baseball cap. On one particular hand, Ungar made him look as foolish as his swirling gray cummerbund.

Stanley had a pair of nines, while Ungar had nothing but queen-high. The five cards on the board held a couple of straight possibilities. What Ungar did have was a lot of chips, and he stuck $220,000 worth into the pot.

Stanley, who had been pressing the bets on that hand, pondered the situation -- call what could be a big bluff and risk being eliminated if Ungar indeed had caught the straight.

Stanley wisely folded, only to be taunted by Ungar, who flipped face-up his two cards that matched nothing on the board. The snickers in the gallery had to irk Stanley as it would any other gambler in that situation.

Two new faces on the poker scene, Las Vegans Peter Bao and Bob Walker, fittingly were the first and second to go, but their $100,000-plus purses were respectable for their first time cashing in at the World Series.

When Stanley was eliminated after trying to pull off a huge bluff against a pair of pocket aces, the field was down to three players.

With the antes at $2,000 each and the blinds $10,000 and $20,000, Mel Judah, the only foreigner among the finalists -- he was born in India and now lives in London -- and Strzemp did not have the luxury to wait for real good hands.

Ungar with $2.1 million in chips, did, but opted to continue the aggressive play that had brought him to the brink of victory.

Judah had played extremely solid, patient and disciplined poker to this point, husbanding his small stack of chips just to survive and making selective positional raises hoping to accumulate more. But he locked horns with Ungar with a marginal hand and was gone.

Down to two players, the game stopped for a moment as several burly Horseshoe security guards came to the table. One carried a cardboard box that once held James River Chiffon white two-ply facial tissues.

Now it held $1 million in bundles of hundred-dollar bills that were dumped onto the table, along with a gold bracelet that soon would belong to Ungar.

When play resumed, Ungar won a few quick pots and held a 4-to-1 edge on Strzemp's chip position.

At 3:04 p.m., Ungar looked at his hole cards, saw the ace of hearts-four of clubs, and raised $60,000. Strzemp, holding the ace of spades-eight of clubs, called.

The flop came ace of clubs-five of diamonds-three of hearts, giving each a pair of aces. Strzemp had the top kicker with his eight, but Ungar had an inside straight draw. Strzemp bet $120,000.

Ungar fidgeted nervously, shuffling his chips and peering back at his hole cards. His eyes darted to the board cards as he calculated his chances.

He knew Strzemp probably had a better kicker to his likely ace, but putting him all-in might force him to fold. In the alternative, Ungar could hit the straight or two running high cards could give him a split.

Ungar raised $800,000. Strzemp didn't hesitate, calling immediately and building a $1,194,000 pot.

The three of diamonds hit on the turn, giving each player two pair. Strzemp had a better kicker, and Ungar needed a card above eight to give him a split pot, a four for two higher pair or a deuce for the winning straight.

The final card was the deuce of spades.

"That was by far my greatest performance ever," a drained Ungar told Horseshoe President Jack Binion. "It was so tough to come back" from the hard times that haunt every professional gambler at some point in their career.

Poker Legacy: The Stu Ungar Foundation
April 27, 2006
Murphy JamesPrint
Email to a friend
Post a comment The formation of the Stu Ungar Foundation has been announced by Stuey’s former wife, Madeline, and his daughter, Stefanie. Stuey’s several addictions and the suicide of Stu and Madeline’s son, Richie, have motivated the family to move in this direction.

According to a February, 2006 announcement letter, signed by Madeline and Stefanie, the mission of the Stu Ungar Foundation is to “deliver ongoing awareness of the problems associated with addictive behavior including gambling, drugs, and suicide, and to supply much needed funds to qualified and recognized organizations that provide treatment and education.”

According to Joe Lake, co-founder of the Children’s Miracle Network (CMN), who has been brought aboard as a volunteer consultant, “This is still very early in the game and we are moving slowly. We are trying to share the vision of the Foundation, establish its image, and build awareness of addictive behavior and suicide.”

Madeline and Stefanie say, “We are confident the Foundation will accomplish something Stu was unable to do in his lifetime – help others avoid making the same mistakes he made. Thankfully, we can draw upon Stu’s great success and legacy as a champion to help create awareness for the first ever charity named after a poker player.”

Poker Ambassador Mike Sexton, who eulogized him at his funeral with “Let’s forgive Stuey for his weakness and his drug problems and remember him for what he was – the greatest player to ever grace the green felt,” has agreed to help out. Madeline and Stefanie are meeting with key people – players and industry execs – to share what they hope to accomplish.

A fundraising plan is under development. Funds are sought for the operation of the Foundation as well as the distribution of funds to the field. Individuals and corporations are being approached. High profile charity poker tournaments are planned for the future.

Joe Lake is a heavy hitter in the nonprofit field. A former advance man for the White House in the Nixon administration, Lake is friends with former President George H. W. Bush and sits on the board of the Dick Cheney Cardiac Research Foundation. He is friends with former President Bill Clinton and New York Senator Hillary Rodham Clinton as well.

During his time with CMN Lake established a fundraising network for 170 children’s hospitals throughout the United States. He went after the nation’s largest corporations, bringing Marriott aboard as a founding sponsor of CMN. He brought in American Express and other major companies. He locked up celebrity endorsements from Hollywood and the world of pro sports.

Lake says, “We envision the CMN model being applied to the Stu Ungar Foundation’s mission and operations. Rather than building new brick-and-mortar facilities, we see existing treatment facilities allying themselves with the Foundation.” Under Lake’s guidance, CMN became the largest children’s charity in the world.

Lake became involved because his son, Brad – one of Joe’s six children - is coordinator of the CMN unit at St. Rose Dominican Hospital in Vegas. Brad knew the Ungar women and recommended that Joe, now retired and a freelance consultant, come aboard as a non-compensated resource to the fledgling charity.

Joe has nurtured the Foundation into the recent formation of a board chaired by insurance executive, David Hensey. Brad Lake is a member of the board. Joe does not serve on the board, nor do Madeline or Stefanie. The board, according to Lake, is diverse in terms of gender and ethnic background.

At the time of this writing (late April, 2006) ESPN is shooting a documentary on Stuey, to be released, says Lake, at the time the 2006 World Series of Poker is shown on television. Information about the Foundation will be a part of the shoot.

The Foundation will continue a tradition of generosity toward charities on the part of many of the top poker pros. For example, Barry Greenstein has contributed millions of his tournament winnings to children’s charities. Phil Gordon has raised millions for cancer research. Jen Harman, who has had two kidney transplants, works on behalf of organ donation organizations. Clonie Gowen, whose mother is an ovarian cancer survivor, helps raise money for that cause.

Some of the greats in sports like Derek Jeter, Tiger Woods, and Brett Favre (and Favre’s wife as well) all have foundations. Why should there not be a foundation named for the winner of three World Series championships, a member of the Poker Hall of Fame, and the one that authors Nolan Dalla and Peter Alson called, “One of a Kind”?
